Canthal Tilt

The angle of the line from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye — and why it comes up so often in conversations about eye-area aesthetics.

What is canthal tilt?

Every eye has two anchor points: the medial canthus — the inner corner closest to the nose — and the lateral canthus — the outer corner closest to the temple. If you draw an imaginary straight line between those two points, the angle that line makes relative to a flat horizontal is called the canthal tilt.

When the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner, the tilt is described as positive. When both corners are at roughly the same height, it is neutral. When the outer corner is lower than the inner corner, it is negative.

The measurement is straightforward: draw a horizontal line through the medial canthus and measure the angle up or down to the lateral canthus. Typical ranges in adults run from about negative five degrees to positive ten degrees, with a mild positive tilt — roughly four to eight degrees — being the most commonly observed value across populations.

Canthal tilt is primarily determined by the underlying orbital bone structure and the attachment of the lateral canthal tendon to the orbital rim. Because it is a skeletal feature, it is largely fixed from early development.

Positive vs negative canthal tilt

The two ends of the spectrum look noticeably different, and each carries distinct informal associations in discussions of eye-area aesthetics.

Positive canthal tilt

The outer corner of the eye sits higher than the inner corner. The line of the eye angles upward toward the temple. In everyday description this sometimes reads as an “almond” or “upswept” eye shape.

In online communities this is frequently called “hunter eyes.” The term is informal and not a clinical classification — it simply reflects the subjective association of an upward-angled eye shape with an alert or intense appearance.

Negative canthal tilt

The outer corner sits lower than the inner corner, giving the eye a downward-slanting line. This is sometimes referred to as “prey eyes” in the same online communities — again an informal label rather than any medical or standardized term.

It is worth being clear: negative canthal tilt is a normal anatomical variant found across all populations. Many faces that are widely regarded as attractive have neutral or mildly negative tilt. Tilt is one feature among many, and its aesthetic weight is frequently overstated online.

How canthal tilt is measured

The standard measurement technique uses a front-facing photograph or clinical assessment with the subject looking straight ahead, head level. Two landmarks are identified:

  • Medial canthus — the innermost point where the upper and lower eyelids meet near the nose.
  • Lateral canthus — the outermost point where the upper and lower eyelids meet near the temple.

A horizontal reference line is drawn through the medial canthus. The angle from that horizontal to the line connecting medial and lateral canthus gives the tilt value in degrees. Positive numbers mean the outer corner is above horizontal; negative numbers mean it is below.

A mild positive tilt of roughly 4–8 degrees is the most commonly observed range. Values above around 10 degrees or below around negative 5 degrees are less typical but not uncommon in certain ethnic backgrounds, where orbital anatomy naturally varies.

Photo-based measurement is sensitive to head angle. A photo taken from even a few degrees above or below eye level shifts the apparent tilt — which is why standardized conditions matter when you are comparing measurements over time. Why it gets talked about

The eye area — including the shape, spacing, and angle of the eyes — is one of the most socially attended regions of the face. It makes intuitive sense that subtle differences in eye shape draw a lot of attention.

Canthal tilt became a specific focal point in online facial aesthetics communities partly because it is measurable and describable in a way that vaguer observations about “eye attractiveness” are not. Giving it a name and a degree value made it easier to discuss — and easier to fixate on.

The practical context worth keeping: canthal tilt is one variable among dozens that contribute to how the eye area reads. Factors like orbital depth, brow position, under-eye volume, eyelid exposure, eye spacing, and the overall harmony of surrounding features all interact with tilt simultaneously. Isolating tilt as the defining factor in eye attractiveness significantly overstates its independent weight.

Can you change your canthal tilt?

Because canthal tilt is rooted in bone structure and the tendon anchoring the outer corner of the eye, no exercise, skincare product, or lifestyle change alters the underlying angle. What you can change is the appearance of the tilt through a few accessible means.

Makeup and grooming. Liner applied in a slight upward flick at the outer corner visually mimics a more positive angle. Conversely, a downswept wing creates the opposite illusion. Brow shaping — particularly lifting the tail of the brow — also shifts how the entire eye angle reads to an observer. These are legitimate, widely used techniques that do not require any commitment beyond a few minutes each morning.

Surgery. Procedures involving the lateral canthus — such as canthoplasty or canthopexy — can surgically reposition the outer corner of the eye. These are real surgical procedures with real recovery times, risks, and cost.
