Cleft Chin

The dimple with a hundred names — butt chin, chin cleft, chin dimple — what actually creates it, why it runs in families, and how it plays with the rest of your lower face.

TL;DR

A cleft chin (informally a butt chin) is a dimple or vertical crease in the chin's center, left where the two halves of the jaw or the chin muscle didn't fully fuse at the midline. It's heritable but not a simple one-gene trait, its visibility shifts with leanness and age, and it's a surface feature — separate from chin projection and jaw structure, which do the heavy lifting in how your lower face reads.

What creates a cleft chin

Your lower jaw develops as two halves that grow toward each other and fuse at the midline before birth. When that fusion leaves a slight gap — in the bone itself, or in the mentalis muscle that drapes over it — the skin above settles into the seam. Shallow version: a soft central dot. Deeper version: the full Y-shaped crease.

Because it's a fusion seam and not a fat or skin feature, no exercise, filler-free routine or weight change creates or removes the structure. What changes is how much soft tissue covers it: leaner faces show their clefts more, fuller faces blur them, and the volume loss that comes with age tends to re-reveal clefts that spent decades hidden.

The genetics — and the myth

The cleft chin spent decades in textbooks as the classic example of a simple dominant trait — one gene, cleft beats no-cleft. That story doesn't survive contact with real families: cleft-chinned parents produce smooth-chinned kids, smooth parents produce dimpled ones, and identical twins occasionally differ in cleft depth.

The modern read is polygenic with variable expression — several genes influence how completely the midline fuses, and development adds its own noise. So yes, it runs in families, strongly. No, you can't Punnett-square it. It's a useful reminder that almost nothing about a face is one gene doing one thing.

What it means for facial balance

The honest answer: less than people think. A cleft is a surface signature — memorable, occasionally iconic — but the traits that decide how a lower face reads are structural: chin projection (see recessed chin and its opposite, the Habsburg chin), jaw definition, and whether the chin sits centered on the face's midline.

The one place a cleft interacts with balance: when the dimple itself sits slightly off-center — which is common — it can make a well-centered chin look shifted. If your chin reads asymmetric in photos, it's worth knowing whether that's the bone or just the crease, because one of those is worth caring about and the other isn't.

What causes a cleft chin?

During development, the lower jaw forms from two halves that fuse in the middle. Is a cleft chin genetic?

Strongly heritable, but not the simple one-gene trait old biology classes claimed. Cleft chins cluster in families, yet parents with clefts can have children without them and vice versa — modern genetics treats it as polygenic with variable expression, meaning several genes and some developmental chance decide how visible it is.

Is a cleft chin the same as a butt chin?

Yes — 'butt chin' is just the informal name for the same trait. 'Chin dimple' is also used, though some reserve 'dimple' for a soft central dot and 'cleft' for a deeper vertical crease. Anatomically they're all the same midline feature at different depths.

Is a cleft chin attractive?

It's one of the most recognizable facial traits and has been a signature feature of leading men and women for a century — it reads as distinctive rather than good or bad. Like most single features, its effect depends on the face around it: chin projection, jaw definition and symmetry carry far more of the overall impression than the dimple itself.

Can a cleft chin go away or get deeper?

The underlying structure is permanent, but its visibility shifts with the soft tissue over it: gaining facial fat pads over the cleft and can soften it, leaning down deepens it, and age-related volume loss often makes it more prominent. That's why some people 'develop' a cleft in their twenties — it was always there, newly uncovered.

Does a cleft chin affect facial symmetry?

Only if the cleft itself sits off-center, which is common and usually subtle. An off-midline cleft can make a perfectly centered chin look slightly shifted — one of many cases where a surface feature reads as asymmetry that the underlying bone doesn't have. A scan that scores chin alignment separately from surface features can tell you which one you're seeing.
