A measure of midface compactness — the ratio of midface width to midface height. A lower number indicates a shorter, wider-feeling midface region.
The midface is the central band of the face — loosely, the region between the eyes and the mouth. It includes the cheekbones, the area under the eyes, the nose, and the upper lip. The midface ratio quantifies one specific aspect of this zone: how wide it is relative to how tall it is.
The most common way to define it is as a simple division: midface width divided by midface height. Width is typically measured between the outer edges of the cheekbones (zygomatic width) or between the pupils as a more reproducible inner landmark. Height runs from approximately pupil level down to the base of the nose or to the top of the upper lip, depending on the reference.
A ratio below 1.0 means the midface is wider than it is tall — a compact, horizontally oriented configuration. A ratio above 1.0 means the midface is taller than it is wide — a longer, more vertically oriented midface. This single number captures one dimension of midface proportion; it does not describe the full picture of the face.
You need a straight-on photo with your face fully relaxed and your eyes looking directly at the camera. Side-angle shots produce inaccurate readings because foreshortening distorts horizontal distances.
Measure the horizontal distance between the outer edges of your cheekbones (zygomatic arch). If your cheekbone edges are not clearly visible in the photo, use the center of each pupil as a consistent substitute — this is the pupil-to-pupil width, which correlates reliably with cheekbone width.
Measure the vertical distance from the center of one pupil straight down to the base of your nose (where the nose meets the upper lip). This is your midface height. Keep your ruler precisely vertical — any tilt inflates the measurement.
Midface ratio = width ÷ height. Use consistent pixel counts in a photo editor, or millimeters on a printed image at a known scale. The unit doesn't matter as long as both measurements use the same unit.
A result around 0.9–1.0 sits in the range commonly associated with a compact midface. Higher values indicate a longer midface. Lower values suggest a relatively wide, very compact midface. Neither direction is inherently correct — see the next section for context.

Research into facial attractiveness and anthropometric norms generally places the midface width-to-height ratio for adults in a broad range of roughly 0.85 to 1.10, with values around 0.9 to 1.0 frequently discussed in the context of a harmonious or compact midface.
The consistent finding across attractiveness studies is that faces near the population average — not faces at the extremes of any single metric — tend to be rated most favorably. A very high midface ratio (tall, long midface) can create the perception of vertical facial excess, while an extremely low ratio (very wide, very short midface) is rare and not necessarily preferred either.
Importantly, midface ratio interacts with the rest of the face. A longer midface on someone with strong jaw definition and a well- proportioned lower face reads very differently than the same midface measurement on a weaker structure. Treating any single ratio as a pass/fail score misses the relational nature of facial proportion.

The midface is one of the first regions of the face to show visible age-related change. As the facial skeleton undergoes gradual bone resorption through adulthood, and as soft tissue loses volume and descends, the midface tends to lengthen and flatten. A more compact midface ratio is often perceived as a marker of a younger facial structure — which is one reason it attracts attention in discussions of facial aesthetics.
High cheekbones contribute to midface compactness in a related way: prominent cheekbones create the visual impression of a face that is wide at eye level, which makes the vertical midface component appear shorter by comparison. This is partly why high cheekbones are consistently associated with a youthful appearance across many cultures and aesthetic traditions.
It is worth keeping this in perspective. The midface ratio is one element in a multi-variable system. Canthal tilt, the facial thirds balance, jawline definition, and overall facial symmetry all interact with midface proportion in how a face is perceived holistically. Focusing on any single ratio in isolation produces an incomplete picture.
The skeletal dimensions that define the true midface ratio — the width of your cheekbones and the height of your midface bone structure — are largely established by the end of adolescence and are not meaningfully changeable through habit alone.
